The Directorate of Research and Development is proud to announce that a pioneering research team from Federal Polytechnic Ede has been nominated for the maiden edition of the Academic Solutions Incubation Program (ASIP) — a flagship initiative funded by TETFUND and implemented in partnership with Innov8 Hub.

The selected team, led by Dr. Ben Festus, will receive technical and strategic support to upscale and advance their groundbreaking innovation, CoolTech, a smart vaccine cooling solution tailored for off-grid and hard-to-reach communities. CoolTech has already gained recognition for its potential to reduce vaccine spoilage during last-mile delivery, especially in low-resource settings. Through the ASIP platform, the team will now develop CoolTech Version 2.0, integrating critical feedback from field users and incorporating next-generation features such as improved insulation, weight optimization, and enhanced IoT capabilities.

Dr. Ben Festus, a seasoned innovator and lead developer of the CoolTech solution, expressed optimism about the opportunity:

“Being part of ASIP not only validates the relevance of our work but also accelerates our journey toward mass adoption. We’re excited to co-create a more robust, scalable, and user-driven version of CoolTech with guidance from industry and policy stakeholders.”

The ASIP initiative aims to translate homegrown academic innovations into market-ready solutions capable of addressing pressing national challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and beyond. CoolTech’s inclusion highlights Federal Polytechnic Ede’s growing role as a national player in research-driven innovation for public good.

The Directorate commends the entire CoolTech team and reaffirms its commitment to supporting indigenous innovations that improve lives and strengthen national development.

We are proud to announce that a research team from Federal Polytechnic Ede, led by Mr. Saka Lukman Ayinde, has been selected to participate in the 2025 edition of the TETFund Alliance for Innovative Research (TETFAIR)—a prestigious national platform for prototyping and commercializing research-driven solutions. The nominated project, titled “Microcontroller-Based Power Management Systems,” seeks to address critical challenges in energy efficiency and reliability by developing intelligent control systems tailored for homes, businesses, and institutions. The solution is designed to monitor, optimize, and protect power usage using embedded microcontroller technologies, with significant potential for commercialization and industrial relevance.

👥 Team Members:

    • Mr. Saka Lukman Ayinde – Team Lead
    • Mr. Goodness O. Edaogbodun
    • Mrs. Ogunwusi A. Adebimpe

This selection underscores the Polytechnic’s growing reputation for innovation, applied research, and national impact. The team will undergo an intensive innovation support program involving design thinking, prototyping, and business development, facilitated through TETFAIR and its partners. This achievement follows the footsteps of CoolTech, the 2023 TETFAIR-winning project also from Federal Polytechnic Ede, further solidifying the institution’s leadership in research commercialization and technology-driven development within the polytechnic sector.

The Directorate of Research and Development congratulates the team and reaffirms its commitment to supporting staff in transforming research ideas into impactful solutions.

In a major boost to research infrastructure and capacity, Federal Polytechnic Ede has commenced the construction of an ultra-modern Central Research Laboratory at its South Campus. This landmark project, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is set to become the first of its kind within the institution and a game-changer for applied research in the polytechnic sector. The Central Research Laboratory is designed to support high-level, interdisciplinary research across science, engineering, technology, and applied fields. It will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation, including:

    • Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
    • X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) system
    • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS)
    • And other advanced equipment for material analysis, environmental testing, and innovation-driven research.

🔬 A Hub for Innovation and Collaboration

Once completed, the Central Laboratory will serve as a shared research environment for staff, students, and industry collaborators—providing access to world-class facilities for experimentation, training, and product development. It will also open doors to new research funding opportunities, consultancy, and prototype testing within the institution and beyond.

According to the Directorate of Research and Development, the lab will enable researchers to carry out high-precision scientific investigations, promote multidisciplinary collaboration, and enhance the institution’s contribution to national development through innovation and problem-solving.

This project reinforces Federal Polytechnic Ede’s position as a leading institution in the Nigerian polytechnic system and signals a new era of impactful, data-driven, and industry-relevant research. Stay tuned for more updates as the construction progresses.
